The SHOGUN promise

Beyond food. A life with dogs,
beautifully designed.

From OND HOTEL — a wellness retreat in Takeo, Saga — comes a simple belief: the ones we love deserve meals made with the same care as our own. This is hospitality-grade nutrition.

MADE IN JAPAN
Why SHOGUN

Three quiet obsessions

01

Fresh meat first

Japanese wild venison

Domestically sourced Japanese venison leads the recipe — fresh meat, not meat meal. Lean, iron-rich, and so clean-smelling that even owners find it appetizing.

02

Gentle-cook craft

Never extruded, never puffed

Slow, low-temperature cooking preserves nutrients that high-heat extrusion destroys — and shapes a dense, rice-grain kibble soft enough to dissolve in water, easing the burden on your dog's stomach.

03

Eight heritage grains

Grown in Japan

A base of eight Japanese-grown grains — with dried bonito for natural umami — brings balanced fiber for gut health, the way Japan has eaten for centuries.

Served the omotenashi way — the way a chef would.

The main ingredient

Wild Japanese venison,
a rare and honest protein

Lean, iron-rich and naturally raised in the Japanese wild. Venison is a novel protein — a gentle choice for dogs with sensitivities to chicken or beef. Blended with dried bonito flakes for the deep umami dogs can't resist, and honored with minimal intervention, the way a chef would.

Grown in Japan

Eight grains, one bowl

Barley Barley Balanced fiber
Brown rice Brown rice Gentle energy
Black rice Black rice Deep color, rich
Red rice Red rice Heritage variety
Job's tears Job's tears Time-honored
Foxtail millet Foxtail millet Small & mighty
Proso millet Proso millet Light & digestible
Barnyard millet Barnyard millet Farm heritage

+ eight Japanese vegetables — daikon leaf, kelp, burdock, carrot, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, takana, perilla

The craft

What high heat destroys,
our craft preserves.

Conventional kibble

  • High-heat extrusion — nutrients degrade
  • Puffed, air-filled pellets
  • Oil coating sprayed on for flavor
  • Meat meal & fillers common

SHOGUN Gentle-Cook

  • Low-temperature craft — nutrition intact
  • Dense rice-grain kibble, 10 mm
  • Naturally palatable — no coating needed
  • Fresh venison & whole grains only
Kibble, at size

About 10 mm across — a grain of rice, not a pebble

Our non-extrusion Gentle-Cook method presses a dense, rice-grain kibble about 10 mm across. Small mouths take it whole. It softens in water for puppies and seniors.

Kibble measurements are average approximations only.

SHOGUN rice-grain kibble beside a millimetre rule — about 10 mm across

Kind to sensitive dogs

Novel protein

Venison, not chicken or beef

Most food sensitivities build against common proteins. Venison is one dogs rarely meet — a fresh start for itchy skin and upset stomachs.

Wheat gluten-free

Gentle grains only

No wheat gluten. Our eight heritage grains bring fiber without the most common grain trigger.

One formula, fully known

One recipe means no cross-recipe surprises. What's on the label is exactly what's in the bowl.

Aroma of bonito the moment the bag opens

As always, the lovely aroma of bonito hits me the moment I open the bag. When our dog reaches the next stage we will probably need a different formulation, but for now this is what we are sticking with.

Recommended by our groomer

We had tried various senior foods. Our regular groomer recommended SHOGUN. Since we switched, there have been no leftovers and no signs of difficulty eating. She actually waits for mealtimes now.

Finally found an oil-free senior food

I had been looking for a food without that strange oily smell, and oil-free options are surprisingly rare. SHOGUN was the first one my senior dog accepted right away. The food itself smells clean. I plan to continue and monitor how his condition develops.

From puppy to senior — a brand we have stayed with

Our previous dog lived to seventeen on this kind of food. We have kept SHOGUN in the rotation for the new one from puppyhood. No oil coating, no wheat flour. The price is on the higher side, but it is far less than the vet bills cheaper food has cost us in the past.

Karl S.
Gluten-free, and the tear stains have eased

I picked this up in a store while looking for a gluten-free option. The food itself smells good and our dog took to it quickly. Over a few weeks the tear staining around the eyes has clearly reduced.

Eight-year-old Toy Poodle, weight management

She is eight and still very food-driven, so a weight-conscious meal is a help. I add a bit of steamed vegetables and a small portion of meat on top. She doesn't eat much of this on its own, but happily clears the bowl with the toppings. The mineral profile in the grains is part of why I picked it.

B
Ben C.
Mixed it in with the adult formula, no complaints

I usually buy the adult formula but my Pekingese was getting a little round, so I tried the lighter version. The smell is gentler than the adult one but the kibble size and the no-oil-coating finish are the same. I have been mixing the two and she eats every bowl with no problem.

Four years in and we are still buying

Four or five years in and we still buy this. No oily coating, that distinctive bonito aroma, and the flat kibble shape that makes it easy for our older dog to eat. Quietly reliable.

P

Three months in: tear stains have visibly improved

We have a miniature Schnauzer and a Toy Poodle. The discolouration around their mouths and the tear stains have visibly improved at the three-month mark. I would have been sceptical without seeing it on our own dogs.

Multi-allergy Shiba — and finally, a food he can eat

Our two-year-old Shiba has multiple food allergies and there are very few foods he can tolerate. SHOGUN was one of them. He likes it too, so the bowl empties fast.

R
Roger H.
Safe food, no harsh smell

I bought this because the smell of regular kibble is unpleasant and most brands are loaded with additives. SHOGUN is the opposite — it doesn't smell strange and the ingredients list is short. I would like to see more brands take this kind of approach.

F
Fiona M.
The traceability is the reason I stay

I appreciate that I can find the farm and the harvest date for the meat in my dog's food. Most brands won't tell you. SHOGUN's transparency is why I subscribed long-term.

More energy on walks

My senior Yorkie has been more eager on morning walks since switching. He's eleven and acts like he's six. The food clearly carries something my old brand didn't.

D
Daniel L.
Skin condition improved

My Cavalier King Charles had recurring skin flare-ups. After three months on SHOGUN the flare-ups stopped. My vet said the fat profile of the food is well-balanced.

B
Brandon F.
He's playing with toys again

My Shih Tzu had stopped engaging with his toys. After a month on SHOGUN he's gone back to old habits — chasing, fetching, the lot. Small change, big difference.

H
Heng L.
The food our refusers love

We have multiple dogs and many of them dislike most kibble we try. This is the one they all eat without fuss. We had been buying from a pet shop and switched to online for a slightly better price.

K
Kelvin H.
Rotated into the regular line-up

I rotate three foods to keep my dog interested. SHOGUN has earned a permanent spot — he eats it as enthusiastically as the freshest option.

H
Hui Lin C.
Settled my old dog's stomach

My fourteen-year-old Pomeranian has a sensitive stomach. SHOGUN has been the first food in years that doesn't upset her. I appreciate that it dissolves easily in water.

C
Charlotte L.
Brighter eyes, calmer demeanour

Within a few weeks of starting SHOGUN my Pomeranian's eyes looked brighter and she settled more quickly. I am not sure which ingredient is responsible — only that something works.

E
Edmund S.
Picky eaters and allergy-prone dogs both did well

We rotate a few foods because one of our dogs has skin allergies and another is just very fussy. Both of them eat SHOGUN without issue. I keep coming back to it.

M
Marcus W.
Stool quality is consistent now

My Shih Tzu had irregular stools for years. Two weeks on SHOGUN and they were firmer and on a regular schedule. Walks in Hong Kong are easier.

M
Mei T.
Apartment-friendly: less smell

I live in a small Hong Kong flat. Food smell matters. SHOGUN is markedly less pungent than the brand I used before, and stool odor is also reduced.

P
Priya R.
Less shedding through humid season

Singapore humidity is hard on coats. I noticed less shedding within a month of switching to SHOGUN — my flat is cleaner and my Schnauzer's coat looks healthier.

M
Mason P.
Lighter than the previous food, needs a topper

Compared to what we fed before, this is a slightly plainer kibble. He doesn't always finish it on its own. I want him to slim down so I am sticking with it and adding a little vegetable and a small amount of meat on top.

E
Elaine S.
Mealtime is the highlight of his day

My French Bulldog watches me prepare his bowl with the same intensity he gives a steak on the dinner table. SHOGUN is clearly more interesting to him than what came before.

W
Wei L.
My fussy poodle finally cleans his bowl

I tried four premium brands before SHOGUN and my Toy Poodle would walk away from each one. With SHOGUN he eats every meal in one sitting. The smell is different — there's a real depth to it.

C
Cherry F.
Senior food that he actually eats

I have been searching for a senior food for our older dog. He has strong opinions about what he will and won't eat. SHOGUN is one of the ones he eats. I will keep monitoring how he does on it.

J
James K.
Easy on digestion

My Bichon used to have heavy breathing after meals. With SHOGUN it stopped — digestion seems gentler. Worth the price for the difference.

S
Sarah T.
Great quality, kibble size is right

Living in a Singapore apartment I worry about smell — SHOGUN has noticeably less odor than my previous brand. The kibble is small enough for my Maltese.

A
Adrian C.
Coat changed in two months

My ten-year-old Pekingese had a dull coat for as long as I remembered. After eight weeks on SHOGUN the gloss came back and his groomer noticed before I told her.

R
Roy T.
Ingredients I would happily eat myself

I like that the ingredients are what people could eat too — it makes me trust the food more. The smell out of the bag is genuinely appetising. My dog is fussy and a slow eater, but he finishes this one quickly.

Days well fed

Urume — where SHOGUN began
Where it began
It started with one dog — Urume, a miniature dachshund whose chronic skin trouble healed on home-cooked meals of mixed grains. That bowl of love became our recipe.

— The founding story of Animal One, SHOGUN's kitchen
“Crafted with the same ingredients we eat.”

Questions, answered

Before the first bowl

How do I switch my dog to SHOGUN?

Transition gradually over about two weeks — start with 10% SHOGUN mixed into the current food and increase daily. Split the daily amount into 2–4 meals, and always keep fresh water available.

Is SHOGUN right for puppies and seniors?

Yes — SHOGUN is a complete and balanced food for all life stages, tested to the Pet Food Fair Trade Council of Japan standard. Use the feeding guide above to adjust portions.

Why does the kibble look different from other brands?

Our non-extrusion Gentle-Cook method makes a denser, rice-grain-shaped kibble. Natural ingredients also vary slightly by harvest season — color and aroma may differ, quality does not.

How does shipping to Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia & Japan work?

Free shipping on every order, with no minimum spend. We dispatch from Japan within 2 business days, and parcels usually arrive about 3 to 4 days later. Your tracking number is in the shipping confirmation email. See our Shipping Policy for the full terms.
